Volunteers are needed in videogaming for room monitoring, setup, and miscellaneous upkeep. We need people to:

  • Ensure that the equipment is handled properly, kept clean, and accounted for.
  • Assist in setting up different consoles and games throughout the day.
  • Maintain a friendly and safe environment, which may include asking troublemakers to leave.
  • Make videogaming staff aware of technical difficulties and assist in solving them if possible.
  • Occasionally assist with passing out snacks, party favors, or prizes.
  • Help to keep contests and tournaments running smoothly.
  • Help with cleanup and inventory at the end of each day.
  • Help with Thursday evening/Friday morning pre-con setup and Sunday evening post-con tear-down.

These jobs do not have to occupy the entire weekend. With more people shifts can be more easily divvied up and we can all see more of the con (and maybe play a few games ourselves ;) ). Questions will be happily answered by Saria.

In Chessiecon's video game room, our mission statement is to give you a fun, safe environment for everyone who loves video games to come play, with a focus on good sportsmanship and friendly bonding over games. We have several consoles old and new, and we add to our collection every year! We showcase various games from Steam on our projector and invite anyone to come check something out! Use one of our computers or bring your own to play Minecraft or other PC games; bring your 3DS, Switch, or other handheld games; or just come to watch or join in our other gaming-related events and contests! Whatever your fancy, we do our best to provide for video game fans of all ages, and our game shelf is always open for guests to peruse.

What's new this year in videogaming?

  • The video game room always needs computers! If you have an old laptop or tower with a decent amount of power or some games already installed on it, please contact us if you would like to donate or loan it to us!
  • Have you ever said to yourself, "I'd love to help the video game room, but I don't know what they need!"? Fear not! We now have an Amazon wishlist! Any game or console that the Crazy Headcrab Lady has brainstormed will be there, along with other assorted equipment the video game room needs, and the list is updated frequently! So if you have games that you'd like to loan or donate, the wishlist here will give you an idea of what we're looking for. You can also check out Saria's Backloggery, which lists all the games we currently own. If you have any questions about what else we might like or need, please feel free to contact us at videogames@chessiecon.org.
  • We have heard your request for more MMOs in our video game room, and we would love to fulfil that request, but it may take some time to do so and may not be for a few years; our computer situation is always uncertain as to what we'll have available each year, and the hotel's wifi isn't reliable enough for a stable connection to an online game. Because of these two factors, we try to avoid putting online games on our loaned computers because we don't want to subject our guests to the frustration of lag. Having our personal wifi for the room is a goal of ours, but it is a little further in the future than we'd like. Please be patient with us; we haven't forgotten the online gamers, we promise!
  • This year we're kicking off our first annual Secret Challenge! Saria and Dragonhand each have a video game challenge for you, and you won't know what it is until the convention! Come to video gaming any time during the con weekend and challenge one of us, and if you beat one of our challenges you win one of our prizes! You also get a ConCardia card just for participating in both of our challenges! Limit one ConCardia card and one prize per challenger per challengee (meaning if you beat one of us you can still try to beat the other for another prize!), there may be blocks where one or both of our challenges won't be available, contact us if you have any questions.
  • Our big gaming event this year is Calvinsmash, named after the unpredictable sport from Calvin and Hobbes! We've compiled a set of strange, goofy, and sometimes just plain chaotic rulesets for Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Smash Brothers for Wii-U, both in-game and in the real world, and invite you to join us for the madness as we roll up a new set of rules every round! You'll get tickets for every round you participate in, and at the end of the event you can trade those tickets in for some cool prizes! Don't be afraid to be silly in this bucking of any sense of fair and balanced play and just come have fun!
  • We have decided to change our Saturday night rhythm game from Crypt of the Necrodancer, to Audiosurf, a fun and trippy roller coaster where the music you pick creates the track! Saria has almost a terrabyte of music and all of it is available for play, or you can bring your own MP3s! For more information on why we made this change, go to this blog post.
  • New games and consoles this year: NES Classic; Playstation 4 with Grand Theft Auto V, Fallout 4, Until Dawn, Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5 Remix, The Last Guardian, and Undertale; Ultimate Chicken Horse on Steam; the Jackbox Party Pack 4 on Steam; Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes on Steam; Audiosurf & Audiosurf 2 on Steam.
